The main issues we\u2019ve heard about are a constant flow of dangerous through-traffic, and nowhere to sit and relax. The council has developed a long-awaited proposal to improve the public space here, with a reported budget of \u00a31.4 million. But the question on everyone\u2019s lips is: What are they proposing, and WILL IT DEAL WITH THE TRAFFIC?!! We dived in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-2 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video autoplay controls loop src=\"https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/V5soearyPa8CLeuD.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week we saw the through-traffic here for ourselves, and the lack of places to sit and relax. We saw two people who had bought cheesecake having to lean against a car, which is, we think you\u2019ll agree, not ideal. Plus we were shown a number of empty units. Sadly, nothing like this. We wanted to know what locals thought of the plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Olivier Bouan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivier Bouan lives a stone\u2019s throw from Connaught Street. He told us that he\u2019s \u201cPleased that Councillors agree that the area needs attention\u201d. But he\u2019s feeling \u201cunderwhelmed and disappointed with this first effort\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasMSVXcAAlKFe-968x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-121\" width=\"483\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasMSVXcAAlKFe-968x1024.jpeg 968w, https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasMSVXcAAlKFe-284x300.jpeg 284w, https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasMSVXcAAlKFe-768x813.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasMSVXcAAlKFe.jpeg 1134w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>He feels that these proposals don\u2019t solve the core problem of the high street- the traffic. \u201cThe traffic IS the problem here\u201d, Olivier tells us. \u201cIt\u2019s an unpleasant, loud, and unsafe place to be &#8211; because of the motor traffic- which is mainly through- traffic\u201d. He says that because drivers are often just using this as a through-route, they want to get through as fast as possible. \u201cWe\u2019ve got lots of antisocial driving, speeding, and not giving way to pedestrians. And as a result, you don\u2019t want to spend any meaningful time outside on this street\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasPGGWwAAupa--1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasPGGWwAAupa--1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasPGGWwAAupa--300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasPGGWwAAupa--768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasPGGWwAAupa-.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/comment\/marylebone-high-street-connaught-village-london-church-b1141529.html\">A piece this week by the Editor-in-chief<\/a> of the Evening Standard says \u201cSadly, Connaught Village was actually far more alive 25 years ago; these days it is in decline, its only relevance being as a rat-run for local traffic\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivier said that as this is a shopping hub, pedestrians would want to zig zag across the road and back, but that here this is dangerous and difficult. \u201cIt\u2019s just really hard to get across the street at all\u201d, he said. \u201cIn a five-minute period last week, I saw two incidents\u201d he continues. \u201cA woman was hit on a zebra crossing- she was okay but it was still hairy, and a cycling delivery rider was hooted loudly by a driver behind them for slowing them down- ironically coming up to this same zebra crossing. He also likes the creativeness of the architect\u2019s design, and loves the colourful areas for people in Barcelona. But the reality is they would gain significantly more support I think, at the cost of a few loud voices.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the council under-appreciates just how much people would get behind an overtly sensible scheme for traffic reduction- especially over time, and even from the current naysayers. Something like a piazza would be a great legacy for them. But like Olivier, hates the amount and the speed of the motor traffic. \u201cConnaught Street is a cut through- from Edgware Road to Paddington station. Drivers often put their foot down when going down Connaught street\u201d she told us, \u201cbecause they want to make it past the lights. The noise bothers me, and also the proximity of the cars to the pedestrians. I feel vulnerable crossing the road. Cars aren\u2019t stopping and so there\u2019s no possibility of popping in\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phil told us that the balance is wrong between cars and pedestrians- she feels pedestrians need to have much more space. She agrees with Olivier that St Johns High Street is a good example- one way traffic with lots of pavement space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also has a message for Councillors, that when it comes to controlling traffic here, \u201cBold is beautiful. Please just go for it. This scheme isn\u2019t going far enough. If there was a piazza here, it would attract people. If there was more space and more to do- people would spend more time on the street\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would love a piazza\u201d she grins. \u201cWhat would I do? I\u2019d talk to strangers! People need to talk to each other! There\u2019s a distinct loneliness in the capital- we need to get to know people in our local community- it\u2019s a mutual support\u201d. Phil loves seeing people playing chess and chatting outside, and thinks that vibe would be great for businesses too.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/freshminster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GHasbWKWsAAbKCG-1-925x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-131\" width=\"512\" height=\"565\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think they\u2019re trying to please the loudest voice\u201d she says. \u201cBut people against changes to the traffic are a minority. And let\u2019s face it\u201d he shrugs. \u201cWe don\u2019t want it to end up like the mound\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we had a a piazza here, with kids out playing on a sunny day\u201d says Olivier, \u201ca coffee in hand and low traffic, I can\u2019t believe anyone would come here and think that it was the wrong decision to do this. It would be a wonderful thing\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that residents here think people-friendly streets are good for business and an election winner.
