Oh! We\u2019ve just met someone who lives in Pimlico! \ud83e\uddf5<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We think this is the first Low Traffic Neighbourhood in London \u2013 it was designed to stop through-traffic around 1970- over 50 years ago!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is Deborah, and she loves living here. \u201cNo-one comes down these roads unless they want to be here, or they\u2019ve got lost\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

The area doesn\u2019t have planters- but a series of one-way streets, and No Entry signs. It\u2019s known as a Bermuda Triangle that even skilled taxi drivers struggle with. \u201cThere\u2019s just hardly any traffic at all- perhaps 10 or so cars go past a day. And it\u2019s just so quiet to walk and cycle around\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deborah and her husband have lived here for 15 years, and she says it\u2019s altered her behaviour. \u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhen I\u2019m coming out of the house, the first options I think about for travelling are walking or – cycling. I\u2019ll take the Brompton if I can, but if there\u2019s nowhere to leave it I\u2019ll get a Santander bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next option would be the tube, although we don\u2019t use it that much, and then the very last option would be to drive. We\u2019d only do that if we really had to\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

She thinks it\u2019s a positive circle when there\u2019s not much traffic. \u201cNeighbourhoods are simply much more pleasant to walk around in, so people feel more like walking and cycling\u201d. But Deborah thinks that it would be difficult to bring in a scheme like this now, because \u201cchange is hard, and people complain\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She says that no-one complains around here, because everyone\u2019s used to it. \u201cThe problem with bringing in new schemes\u201d, she says. \u201cIs that people just can\u2019t imagine what neighbourhoods are like without cars. All people think is- it will take me 7 extra minutes to drive to that shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re not thinking of all the benefits they\u2019d get the other 23.5 hours of the day- the peace and quiet, the safety, everything else\u201d. Deborah would like more people to experience a neighbourhood with less traffic. \u201cThese LTN\u2019s need to be well-designed\u201d she says. \u201cAnd you need to give them a chance to bed in\u201d. And she thinks we need strong leadership from Politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s a big fan of the local Councillor, Jim Glen, who she says is very supportive of cycling. Deborah thinks the time is now for a modal shift. \u201cIf we can, we just have to change our lifestyle\u201d she says. \u201cIf we\u2019re serious about saving the planet, we just have to change our lifestyle, and find alternatives to car journeys wherever we can\u201d Hear hear Deborah. We couldn\u2019t agree more.<\/p>\n\n\n
